            The Rainbow Flag Award

Sutton VA Lower School is recognised for its strong commitment to inclusion and the ways in which it celebrates diversity through; our Values Education Programme, outstanding Religious Education and Global Learning provision.

To develop this further, Staff and Governors at Sutton VA Lower School are proud to announce that they have been successful in their application to take part in The Rainbow Flag Award. The Kite Trust has come together with partner organisations (The Proud Trust in Manchester, Allsorts in Sussex and DISC in the North East) to run a project under the Government Equalities Office, via the Department for Education. Titled the Rainbow Flag Award, it enables schools to effectively combat and prevent homophobic, biphobic and transphobic (HBT) bullying.

The Rainbow Flag Award, led by Mrs Chapman and Mrs Gent, will encourage a whole school approach in order to help tackle HBT bullying and promote LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans) inclusion.

Schools that take part in this project will have help to meet:

  • Their legal requirement to ensure LGBT inclusion in schools;
  • The Ofsted requirement for them to be effective in tackling HBT bullying.
  • Their moral requirement to meet the needs of LGBT young people, given the wealth of evidence showing that LGBT young people are still disproportionately affected by mental health issues and teen suicide.

To achieve The Rainbow Flag Award, the school is expected to take part in a quality assurance process, submitting evidence in each of the Rainbow Flag areas. Schools have a maximum of 12 months to complete the full Rainbow Flag Award.

We look forward to sharing some of the ways in which we will evidence the impact of our work over time. Please see attached some FAQ’s and do not hesitate to speak with staff about this new initiative.
