P.E Impact Reports and Action Plans

What is PE and sport premium?

The primary PE and sport premium was introduced in March 2013 to improve the provision of physical education and school sport in primary schools across England. The £150 million per year funding is provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health, and Culture, Media and Sport (DfE, DH, DCMS). The funding is allocated directly to primary schools and is ring-fenced. This means it may only be spent on improving the provision of PE and sport in schools. In February 2014 the government committed to continue the funding until 2020.

Purpose of funding

Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.

Possible uses for the funding might include:

  • hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers when teaching PE
  • supporting and engaging  the least active children through new or additional Change4Life clubs
  • paying for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport
  • providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE and sport
  • running sport competitions, or increasing pupils’ participation in the School Games
  • buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE and sport
  • providing places for pupils on after school sports clubs and holiday clubs
  • pooling the additional funding with that of other local schools

Statement regarding School Sporting competitions and tournaments

As part of our PE provision, we subscribe to the East Beds Schools Sports Partnership. Within this, a PE specialist Mr Blunt, coordinates and leads a number of sporting activities and events throughout the year that take place at Sutton, at other schools and sports stadiums. These include things like Bikeability, First Aid for children, intra-school and inter-school competitions and tournaments.

All schools that subscribe to this are invited to take a proportion of their class to attend inter-school competitions and events, such as Quad Kids Athletics as the Bedford Athletics Stadium, Kwik Cricket at Blunham Cricket ground.

All schools can only take a proportion of pupils to each event as they are competing against lots of schools. As such, we aim to provide each pupil with the opportunity to compete at at least one event over the course of the academic year. Unfortunately, this year (2021-2022) Covid has reduced the number of events to the summer term.

As pupils get older (in Middle and Upper Schools) selection for such events are usually based on sporting ability. Taking a small group of pupils, prepares them for this competitive aspect of sport. At Sutton, we do not apply this (ability) criteria, although we do ask the children if they are keen to attend.

For these reasons the whole class cannot attend each event.
