  • Phonics

During the spring term Phase 3 continues in the same way as Phase 2 and introduces more new GPCs. By the end of Phase 3 the children should know one way of writing down each of the 44 phonemes.

In class we use we follow Letters and Sounds and use the online resource ‘Phonics Play’ to deliver phonics. You can access some of the games/activities without subscribing: https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/

At home, your child can watch the following videos that match the Phase 3 letters and sounds that are being taught in school. Please supervise your child when watching online content.

Set 6 - j v w x

Set 7 - y z zz qu

Consonant digraphs - ch sh th ng

Vowel digraphs (and trigraphs) ai ee igh oa oo ar or ur ow oi ear air ure er

Phonics Glossary

Phoneme - The smallest unit of sound. There are approximately 44 phonemes in English (it depends on different accents). Phonemes can be put together to make words.

Grapheme - A way of writing down a phoneme. Graphemes can be made up from 1 letter e.g. p, 2 letters e.g. sh, 3 letters e.g. tch or 4 letters e.g ough.

GPC - This is short for Grapheme Phoneme Correspondence. Knowing a GPC means being able to match a phoneme to a grapheme and vice versa.

Digraph - A grapheme containing two letters that makes just one sound (phoneme).

Trigraph - A grapheme containing three letters that makes just one sound (phoneme).

Oral Blending - This involves hearing phonemes and being able to merge them together to make a word. Children need to develop this skill before they will be able to blend written words.

Blending- This involves looking at a written word, looking at each grapheme and using knowledge of GPCs to work out which phoneme each grapheme represents and then merging these phonemes together to make a word. This is the basis of reading.

Oral Segmenting - This is the act hearing a whole word and then splitting it up into the phonemes that make it. Children need to develop this skill before they will be able to segment words to spell them.

Segmenting - This involves hearing a word, splitting it up into the phonemes that make it, using knowledge of GPCs to work out which graphemes represent those phonemes and then writing those graphemes down in the right order. This is the basis of spelling.

  • Reading

Your child will bring home their reading book to share with you at home. To build your child self-esteem as a reader it is really valuable to allow them to re-read a familiar book so that they can ‘sound like a reader’.

It is also wonderful for children to engage in listening to others and reading of a range of texts at home – magazines, recipe books, poems.

  • Dinosaurs
  • Share non-fiction texts with your child to help them look up different dinosaurs.
  • Can your child name different dinosaurs and describe some of their features?
  • Draw/Paint a picture of a dinosaur. Can you add some labels?

  • RE
  • Do you celebrate Easter? What do you do to celebrate?
  • Help your child in finding out which animals lay eggs. Make a list.
  • Decorate an egg!

  • Values

Our Values this term are Humility, Love and Patience. Can you help your child recognize what these Values mean and how they and others can ‘Live these Values’ in their actions and words?

The UK Government has backed The Oak National Academy, a new national online school, which provides video lessons, worksheets and quizzes related to many subjects. Feel free to dip in to these or stick with the activities we have provided below. The Oak National Academy has been created by teachers. Some of the topics that they explore may interest your child. Please do not worry if your child doesn't understand everything as, once school reopens we will be working with our pupils to cover all the key areas of learning they require.
